Equinox Software’s Story:
In 2007, current president, Brad LaJeunesse, was employed by the Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) when an impasse was reached with their library software – a proprietary Integrated Library System (ILS). None of the current software on the market could handle the size of their consortium of libraries, so the team decided to build their own scalable library software platform. Enter: Evergreen. Deciding that open source was the right direction to take, the team developed the Evergreen software platform in-house at GPLS before deploying it to libraries. Evergreen’s popularity grew quickly and in 2007, with encouragement from GPLS, Brad LaJeunesse and original Evergreen developers, Mike Rylander, Bill Erickson and Jason Etheridge, Equinox Software, Inc. was founded.
Today, Equinox is the world’s largest provider of open source solutions for Evergreen and has expanded its services to include support for the Koha open source ILS and the open source Inter Library Loan product, FulfiLLment. Evergreen is currently used in production at more than 1,300 public, academic and special libraries across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and overseas.
Significance of Equinox Software’s presence in Gwinnett/metro Atlanta:
Other states have begun the process of creating state-wide library networks based on the Georgia model of the Evergreen system that allows users to access materials from anywhere in the state. As the largest support provider for Evergreen, Equinox’s growth over the past seven years has been amazing and rewarding.
